History of the College

Poompuhar College, Melaiyur, Tamil Nadu one of the oldest Government Aded College in the State, established in 1964 has been grooming students for long 54 years. Ever since its inception, it aims towards offering quality education to its students, in accordance with instructions laid down by the University Grants Commission, Of late, the institution is looking forward the second visit by the NAAC Peer Team and Autonomous Peer team for its appraisal of this institution of higher learning. Poompuhar College is located on the southern bank of the river Cavery in the village popularly known as Melaiyur-Poompuhar, in Sirkali Talk of Bay of Bengal in five kilometers, which was once a thriving port city of the ancient Chola Empire. In olden days, the Harbor city witnessed a business hub trade and commerce running the ocean until the Roman Empire. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Board, Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu established the institution to glorify the greatness of the place by diverting funds from the temples and Religious institutions. His highness Maharaja of Mysore Jayasamaraja Udayar, the Governer of Tamilnadu inaugurated this college on 02.05.1964 has been striving to achieve excellence in higher education and preparing students for facing global requirements in this highly competitive age. The institution inculcates promotion of knowledge and all-round development of youth, to face the challenges of the world. Its aim is to create a complete man endowed with awareness of human rights, value system, culture, scientific temper, competence and creativity among the students.

Our noble institution has been accredited with “B+” Grade as its first assessment at the middle of 2007 and received Autonomous Status in the year of 2009. The IQAC of the College, soon after the first assessment the institution remarkably improved in the academic and administrative activities. It effectively envisages the total quality management in order to build this institution an ideal Centre of higher learning. It supports different awareness programmes, teaching, learning, evaluation, holding Seminars and mobilization funds from various funding agencies in order to proceed research with social relevance, orientation and refresher training for competence building among the staff, constitution of different committees for the development of the institution, leadership activities among the students to put forth their constructive suggestion for the academic development. The quality assurances in every aspect are the paradigm of IQAC. Thus our students have been boldly facing the challenges of life in winning laurels in various fields. The criterion-wise compendium shall be noteworthy for our institution.
